Helping with Guatemala Relief
Kathy asked me to find organizations that are providing relief to Guatemala in the wake of Hurricane Stan and the subsequent mudslides and flooding from the storm's rain. She plans to make a donation to one or more of these organizations and urges her friends to, too. The following all appear to be respected organizations who either are already working, or will soon be working, in the affected areas:
Catholic Relief Services
Project Concern International - Their donation page specifically for this crisis is found here.
World Vision
A special note about an organization called Coffee Kids: This is an organization that I have donated to in the past because I like their approach to helping poor families around the world who grow, harvest and help process coffee. Following the Asian tsunami, they had a special relief drive for Aceh, Sumatra, a coffee growing region that was devastated by the quake and flood. As of today when I checked their web site, I did not see anything directed at the current disaster in Guatemala. They do have projects there (on this page there's a write-up about a Coffee Kids project in San Pedro de la Laguna, one of the towns on Lake Atitlan), so I wouldn't be surprised to see them announce a relief drive there, too, soon.
